Mum Jailed for Baby’s Death After Fiery Trial
Chelsea Louise Cuthbertson, 28, from Hythe, has been sentenced to nine years behind bars following the tragic death of her one-month-old son, Malakai Watts, in February 2019.
Not Guilty of Murder, Guilty of Manslaughter
After a tense trial at Winchester Crown Court, the jury took nearly 14 hours to reach a verdict. Cuthbertson was cleared of murder but found guilty of manslaughter for the fatal injuries inflicted on Malakai.
Tragedy Unfolded on Knightwood Road
Emergency services rushed to a Knightwood Road property in Hythe on 2 February 2019, responding to reports of a seriously ill baby. Despite efforts at southampton/" title="Southampton" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital, little Malakai sadly died days later from his injuries.
Justice for Malakai
Sentencing Cuthbertson to nine years, Winchester Crown Court brought a bitter end to a heartbreaking case. Detective Inspector Toby Elcock, leading the investigation, commented:
“Justice has been served today but we know that nothing can bring Malakai back. The death of a child is absolutely devastating and our thoughts remain with Malakai’s family.”
