Two Private Hospitals Slammed for Hiding Patient Data

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has publicly warned two private hospitals for failing to share key performance data. The Ulster Independent Clinic in Belfast and Fortius Clinic in London have ignored the rules set out by the Private Healthcare Market Investigation Order (PHO), blocking vital patient information from publication.

Patient Safety at Risk as Clinics Flout Data Rules

Under the 2014 PHO, private hospitals must provide details on patient care and outcomes to the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN). This info helps patients compare hospitals and consultants before choosing treatment. But the two clinics have refused to hand over essential data, leaving patients in the dark and unable to judge which provider offers the best care.

CMA Threatens Legal Action Unless Clinics Comply

Both hospitals have now submitted plans to fix the problem within six months. But CMA warns if they don’t deliver, tougher enforcement is coming—including legally binding orders or even court proceedings.

David Stewart, CMA Executive Director, said: “Choosing private healthcare is a tough decision. Hospitals must empower patients with clear info via PHIN so they can pick the best care for themselves and their families. Unfortunately, some clinics are refusing to do this.”

“Consultants are also expected to publish their fees—three-quarters have complied so far. We’re ramping up enforcement to make sure rule-breakers face consequences and patients don’t lose out.”

What the Breach Means for Patients

  • Important data on patient feedback and treatment outcomes remain unpublished.
  • Prospective patients lack the info needed to compare hospitals and consultants fairly.
  • PHIN cannot update its databases without the clinics’ data.
