Tragic Double Canoe Capsize Claims Two Women’s Lives in Bedford
Emergency Services Respond to Horror at Weir Embankment
Emergency crews rushed to the Weir embankment on Water Lane at 10:50am on April 16 after reports of two canoes capsizing. Sadly, rescue turned to recovery as the bodies of two women were found shortly after arrival.
Victims Named as Sarah Waller and Laura Pottinger
The women have been identified as 56-year-old Sarah Waller and 52-year-old Laura Pottinger, both residents of Wendover Drive, Bedford.
Heartbreaking Tributes Pour In From Families
Sarah’s family expressed their grief: “We are devastated at the tragic loss of our sister and aunt Sarah. She was much loved by all and had many friends within the Bedfordshire community.”
“Sarah’s passion for canoeing was her way of being outside and at one with nature. For this to have taken her and Laura’s lives is beyond anything we can comprehend.”
They added: “We have been overwhelmed by kind messages and shared memories – she touched so many lives and was taken far too soon.”
Laura’s family also paid tribute: “Laura, your passing has left us all completely heartbroken. Everyone who knew you has had their lives enriched by your kindness, intelligence, humour, and love.”
“You were a phenomenal mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunty, and friend. Your talent and contribution to the arts created an extraordinary legacy. Rest in Peace.”
Investigation Ongoing
The tragedy has now been referred to the coroner for further investigation.
