Man Sentenced for Deadly Street Attack in Barrowford
Michael Hannan launched a brutal attack on James O’Hara during a chance encounter on Gisburn Road, Barrowford, on October 19, 2021. The savage punch caused fractures to O’Hara’s eye socket and nose, knocking him backward onto the pavement. He hit his head hard, sustaining further skull fractures.
Victim Dies After Suffering Horrific Injuries
James O’Hara, 45, was rushed to hospital and treated before being discharged. But his condition worsened, and he tragically died from acute bacterial meningitis—a direct result of his head injuries sustained during the assault.
He didn’t even know Hannan. O’Hara was simply walking by, carrying a vinyl LP he’d just bought from a nearby charity shop, when he was attacked.
Attacker Boasts Hours After Assault
Hannan fled the scene, leaving O’Hara unconscious on the pavement. Less than two hours later, Hannan shamelessly sent photos of himself flexing his muscles to friends and bragged about the attack in messages.
Five Years Behind Bars for Manslaughter
Michael Hannan, from Tynwald Road, Blackburn, admitted manslaughter on the first day of his trial at Preston Crown Court on April 24. He was sentenced on April 27 to five years and four months in prison.
“My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of James O’Hara,” said Detective Chief Inspector Mark Haworth-Oates. “James posed no threat and was struck with such force that led to his death. Hannan showed no remorse and only admitted guilt on trial day.”
In a statement, O’Hara’s family said: “That one act of violence has devastated us all. The prison sentence gives some closure, but our hearts remain broken. We thank the police for their tireless work and friends and family for their support. Jay will never be forgotten.”
