In a high-stakes operation, police units engaged in a tense pursuit of a BMW driver who recklessly attempted to enter a motorway in the wrong direction during the morning rush. The 34-year-old Manchester man is now in police custody following the dramatic chase.
The incident, which occurred on the M6, saw police officers in both marked and unmarked vehicles strategically immobilize the black BMW convertible to avert potential disaster. Witnessed by commuters, a marked police car delivered a tactical hit to the vehicle, causing it to spin, halting its dangerous journey.
Cheshire Police reported that the driver’s initial intent was to traverse the carriageway against the flow of traffic. His arrest followed a series of offences including suspicion of failing to stop, the use of a cloned number plate, dangerous and intoxicated driving, and two counts of drug driving.
The chase reached a climax near junction 20 at Lymm, where police successfully corralled the vehicle around 3:30 pm, transitioning from the M56 to the M6. Chris Gibney, an eyewitness, captured footage showing the moment the police enclosed the car. Recounting the near-miss with his own vehicle, Gibney described the apprehension of the suspect and the swift action of the officers, including a dog handler.
Inspector Anton Sullivan of the Cheshire Police Roads and Crime Unit lauded the responding team’s efforts. He emphasized the severe risk the driver posed to other road users, especially given the timing during peak traffic hours. Sullivan highlighted the imperative to intercede before the BMW could reach the Thelwall Viaduct.
The quick resolution of the incident allowed for a brief cleanup and the reopening of the outer lane to regular traffic flow. The suspect remains detained as the investigation into the full breadth of his offences continues.
