Two Teens Found Guilty of Brutal Sheffield Murder
Two Sheffield teenagers have been convicted of murdering 19-year-old Adam Abdul-Basit in a savage stabbing attack. Thomas Hardiman and Xander Howarth, both 18 now but just 17 at the time, stabbed Adam on May 8, 2023, then left him to die on a stranger’s doorstep.
Chased, Stabbed, and Left to Die
CCTV footage revealed the pair chasing Adam down Smelter Wood Road, knives in hand. Howarth, wearing a balaclava and stab vest, raised a machete high before striking. Adam desperately tried to escape but was stabbed deeply in the chest—a wound 15cm deep.
Despite his injuries, Adam dragged himself to a nearby front door seeking help. However, medics could not save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Justice Served After 12-Day Trial
Hardiman and Howarth both pleaded not guilty but were found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court after a 12-day trial. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge described the attack as “horrific and savage,” stressing the impact on the victim and his family.
“They must now face the prospect of spending a considerable length of time behind bars, while Adam’s family deals with unimaginable grief,” said DCI Etheridge.
“Adam died alone. His attackers fled like cowards but justice has caught up with them.”
Sentencing Set for December 22
Hardiman of Edenhall Road and Howarth of Richmond Park View will be sentenced at Sheffield Crown Court on December 22. Police thanked all involved for gathering the crucial evidence that sealed the killers’ fate.
This brutal daylight stabbing has left Sheffield shaken, and Adam’s family grieving a young life and dreams brutally cut short.
