In a precautionary move, four varieties of cheese have been recalled due to potential contamination with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), raising concerns that these cheeses may have been included in Christmas hampers.
The cheeses subject to recall are Mrs Kirkham’s Mild and Creamy Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Tasty Lancashire, Mrs Kirkham’s Mature Lancashire, and Mrs Kirkham’s Smoked Lancashire. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued the recall notice on Christmas Eve, emphasizing that all sizes of these cheeses are affected, including individual portions that may have been featured on grazing platters.
E. coli infections can lead to symptoms similar to the flu, including a high temperature, muscle aches or pain, chills, nausea, and diarrhoea. In rare instances, the infection can become severe, causing complications such as meningitis.
“It may not always be clear whether you have purchased an affected product,” warned the FSA. To determine if the cheese they have purchased is part of the recall, consumers are advised to contact the store where they made the purchase. In the meantime, individuals should refrain from consuming the cheese and take precautions.
The FSA recommended, “Ensure the product is thoroughly wrapped and does not come into contact with any other foods. Wash your hands, equipment, utensils, and surfaces that may have come into contact with the product thoroughly.”
Customers who have bought the affected cheeses since October 1, 2023, can return them to the store where they were purchased and receive a full refund. The recall serves as a proactive measure to protect public health and safety.
