Heartless Thief Jailed for Robbing 82-Year-Old in Wheelchair

A callous robbery targeting an 82-year-old woman in a wheelchair has landed 21-year-old Troy Wildin behind bars for over three years. The brazen crime took place in November 2023 inside a Rotherham supermarket, where Wildin targeted the elderly woman while she shopped with her daughter.

Wildin Spotted Victim at Cash Machine

Sheffield Crown Court heard how Wildin stalked the mother and daughter as they withdrew cash. Spotting his chance, he snatched the grandmother’s handbag and made a run for it. But quick-thinking shoppers gave chase, blocking his escape until police arrived and recovered the stolen bag with all its contents intact.

Swift Justice Served

Wildin, of St Marys View, appeared in court on January 9 and was found guilty of attempted robbery. He was sentenced to three years and three months behind bars.

Detective Constable Megan Byne praised the heroic actions of witnesses and security staff. She said,

“This was a cruel robbery where Wildin chose to target an elderly woman. I’d like to thank those quick-thinking witnesses and security guards who intervened to detain Wildin. I hope that this sentence offers reassurance to the victim, and she can move on from the ordeal. I’d like to send a clear message to the public that the police will pursue those who think they are entitled to steal from others to ensure we keep our streets and communities safe.”
