Hastings Cracks Down on Dog Owners with Tough New Rules

Hastings Borough Council has slammed the leash on dog owners with a revamped public space protection order (PSPO), now in force across Hastings and St Leonards. The move aims to boost public safety and keep beaches, parks, and green spaces spotless.

Leashes Mandatory Along Promenade – Limit of Six Dogs

The new PSPO demands all dogs be kept on a lead along the entire promenade. Plus, no one person can walk more than six dogs at a time. Dog mess must be cleared up immediately and tossed in designated bins – no excuses.

Fines Up to £1,000 for Rule Breakers

Ignoring these rules won’t be cheap. Offenders face on-the-spot fines reaching £100, with serious breaches potentially leading to prosecution and fines up to £1,000.

Beach Dog Ban Zones from April to September

Council has declared two summer dog exclusion zones on Hastings beach from 1 April to 30 September:

  • East of Rock-a-Nore to the east side of Hastings Pier
  • West end of Bottle Alley to opposite the Royal Victoria Hotel

Outside these zones, dogs are allowed on the beach, on or off lead, in designated areas. Park visitors must also follow lead rules posted on signs in green spaces.

Council Seeks Community Feedback

Councillor Haffenden said the changes are “for the safety and comfort of all residents and visitors.” He urged locals to share their views on the new rules and dog behaviour in public spaces.
