Huge Blaze Hits Dagenham Flats: London Fire Brigade Launches Massive Rescue

A ferocious fire erupted shortly before dawn on Monday at a block of flats on Freshwater Road, Dagenham. London Fire Brigade scrambled an enormous response, deploying 40 fire engines and around 225 firefighters to battle the flames.

Rapid Response to a Raging Inferno

The alarm was raised at 2:44 a.m., and fire crews sprang into action. The first team arrived within five minutes, quickly followed by more units, including an aerial appliance to tackle the blaze from above. The fire engulfed the entire building, including scaffolding and the roof. It was officially declared a major incident as firefighters raced to evacuate residents and prevent the fire from spreading.

London Fire Commissioner Andy Roe praised the crews for their bravery. “I am immensely grateful to the crews and officers who operated in the most dangerous conditions to rescue people and bring the incident under control despite significant building challenges,” he said.

Evacuations and Heroic Rescues

  • More than 80 residents were safely evacuated, many led out by firefighters.
  • Twenty people were given fire escape hoods, providing up to 15 minutes of clean air in smoky conditions.
  • Four people received treatment at the scene; two were rushed to hospital.
  • All residents have now been accounted for, with no confirmed fatalities.

Firefighters Face Tough Challenges

The building had known fire safety issues, adding complexity to the operation. Fire Brigade Control Officers handled 16 emergency calls, coordinating efforts with new tech like drones and towering turntable ladders reaching 64 meters high. These tools gave commanders a bird’s eye view and helped douse flames from above, crucial in such a high-risk incident.

Community Support and Ongoing Investigation

A rest centre opened at Beacontree Health and Leisure Centre, staffed by fire, community support teams, and partners, offering aid to displaced residents. Firefighters remained on site throughout the day, monitoring for flare-ups.

The London Fire Brigade has launched a full investigation into the fire’s cause, with a sharp focus on the building’s fire safety failings. Commissioner Roe acknowledged the concerns, adding, “Our thoughts are with all those affected. We will stay close to the community in the coming days to provide support.”

A Unified Effort Brings the Blaze Under Control

Fire crews from Dagenham, Ilford, Romford, Barking, and surrounding stations joined the operation. The major incident was stood down at 11:03 a.m., with the fire declared under control by 11:13 a.m. Commissioner Roe thanked everyone involved, from frontline firefighters to control officers and local partners, for their heroic and coordinated response.

The investigation continues as authorities vow to tackle fire safety and protect residents going forward.
