Drunk Driver Kills Pensioner in Shocking A507 Crash
Jason Briars, 54, admitted causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal smash on the A507 near Maulden in November 2021.
Twice Over Limit After Boozy Session
The court heard Briars had sunk nine pints of Guinness and a pint of cider over four and a half hours at a local bar. Tested behind the wheel, he was found to have twice the legal alcohol limit in his blood.
Van Swerves Into Oncoming Traffic
Ignoring the booze, Briars drove his Ford Transit van and veered into the path of an oncoming Vauxhall Corsa. The driver of the Corsa, 83-year-old Thomas De Lacy, suffered serious injuries and tragically died in hospital.
Witnesses Describe Erratic Driving and Stumbling Driver
A witness recalled Briars’ erratic driving moments before the crash. After the impact, Briars was seen stumbling with slurred speech as he got out of his van.
Sentenced and Slapped With Long Ban
At Luton Crown Court on Friday 15 March, Briars, from Ampthill Road, pled guilty and was sentenced. He received a four-and-a-half-year driving disqualification.
