Burglar Gets Jail for Raiding Elderly Woman’s Home
A callous burglar has been locked up for 18 months after stealing a staggering £80,000 worth of valuables from a pensioner’s Salisbury home.
Edy Hernandez’s Brazen October Break-In
29-year-old Edy Hernandez, from Wilton Avenue, Southampton, pleaded guilty to burglary and theft at Southampton Crown Court on April 19. On the night of October 5, 2023, he forced his way into the home of a woman in her 70s through an upstairs window while she was out.
Hernandez made off with a haul including:
- A flat-screen TV and tablet
- Several suitcases
- Rare and distinctive bottles of alcohol
- Precious jewellery such as diamond rings, earrings, brooches, pendants, pearl chains, a ruby ring, and Georgian drop diamond earrings
Heartbreaking Aftermath for Victim
The next day, the elderly woman returned to find her home ransacked and prized possessions missing. She described the emotional torment as “horror, heartbreak and vulnerability.” She thanked the police for their support throughout the ordeal, crediting them with bringing some closure.
Police Act Fast to Nab Hernandez
Wiltshire Police’s Burglary Team launched a swift investigation, arresting Hernandez within a month. Some stolen items were found at his Southampton home. Detective Sergeant Ted Roe slammed Hernandez’s actions as invasive and harmful, pledging that police will keep cracking down on burglars.
