Drink driver jailed for killing grandad in reckless crash
Tarnjeet Multani, 21, of Southall, was slammed with a nine-year prison sentence at the Old Bailey on Monday, 29 April. He caused the death of 59-year-old grandfather Kishore Kumar Gill by dangerous driving.
Speeding, drinking and deadly crash
Multani was found guilty on 22 March of causing Mr Gill’s death on Greenford Road, west London. At the time, he was over the legal alcohol limit and blasted down a 20mph street at 65mph.
Family devastated by senseless loss
“Kishore Kumar Gill had nine children and 13 grandchildren, with one on the way,” the family said. “He was healthy, fit, a regular gym-goer, and loved by all.
“It’s heartbreaking that his life was cut short at just 59, crossing the road like he had hundreds of times before on his way to work.
“His youngest grandchildren will never know him. Nothing can replace what we’ve lost, but this verdict gives us some justice and a way to honour his memory.”
Police praise tough investigation
Detective Sergeant Nush Puvitharan of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command said: “Kishore was taken away from his family because of Multani’s reckless actions. We hope today’s sentence offers his loved ones some comfort as they mourn.
“Multani’s conviction came from a determined probe by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit and Forensic colleagues, whose work was key in uncovering the truth and Multani’s dangerous speed.”
Crash details and aftermath
- The crash happened at 5.35am on 15 February 2022 at Greenford Road and Bingley Road junction.
- Multani’s VW Polo struck Mr Gill, who died at the scene despite emergency response.
- Multani did not stop straight away but was caught shortly after and arrested.
