Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, who leads local policing for the Met’s East Area Command, issued an update following the tragic incident in Hainault earlier today.
Bell began by expressing profound sadness over the death of a 14-year-old boy who was fatally stabbed during the incident. He confirmed that the child’s family is receiving support from specially trained officers, and emphasized that the entire Metropolitan Police force stands in solidarity with them during this incredibly difficult time.
The events of the morning were described as “truly horrific,” and Bell extended his thoughts to all those affected by the incident, including the injured, their families, and the wider community. He acknowledged the natural desire for answers and reassured that the investigation is underway, with officers prioritizing the establishment of full circumstances surrounding the incident.
A 36-year-old man, who was Tasered and arrested approximately 22 minutes after the initial police call, is currently in custody. Bell reiterated that there is no perceived ongoing threat to the wider community, and the incident does not appear to be terror-related.
Providing an overview of the casualties, Bell stated that five people were injured, including three members of the public and two police officers. While the two members of the public remain hospitalized, their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The two Met officers also sustained stab wounds requiring surgery, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
Bell commended the bravery of emergency services personnel who responded swiftly to the scene, highlighting their dedication and courage.
