Man Jailed for Causing Serious Injury by Dangerous Driving in Reading

After a thorough investigation by Police, Jamie Banning, aged 30, of The Maying, Reading, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The sentencing took place at Reading Crown Court on Thursday, May 2, where Banning also received a six-year and 10-month disqualification from driving. Additionally, he was ordered to retake an extended driving test before reapplying for a driving license.

Banning pleaded guilty on May 28 to one count each of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop.

The incident occurred on November 20 last year, around 8:49 pm, when Banning was driving a white BMW 1 series at high speed along Basingstoke Road in Reading. He veered onto the wrong side of a keep-left bollard, colliding with a man riding an electric bike in the opposite direction. Following the collision, Banning fled the scene, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

He was apprehended on December 11, found hiding in the loft of a family member, and subsequently charged the next day.

In addition to the driving offences, Banning had previously been convicted of assaulting two officers while in custody following his arrest.

Phil Hanham, of the Joint Roads Policing Unit, expressed his sympathy for the victim and their family, acknowledging the long road to recovery they face. He extended gratitude to the witnesses who stopped at the scene and the victim’s family for their cooperation in the police investigation.

Hanham also emphasized the dedication of the officers involved in bringing Banning to justice, stating, “We will not tolerate behaviour such as this on our roads, and will robustly pursue and prosecute those who feel it’s acceptable to disregard the law.

The case underscores the serious consequences of dangerous driving and serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and accountability for all motorists.
