Speeding Driver Jailed for Nearly Four Years After Horrific Crash in Reading
Jamie Banning, 30, from The Maying, Reading, has been slammed with a prison sentence of three years and nine months for causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The Reading Crown Court handed down the punishment on Thursday, May 2.
Heavy Sentence and Tough Driving Ban
Banning was also disqualified from driving for six years and 10 months. Before getting his licence back, he’ll have to retake an extended driving test.
He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving, driving without insurance, and failing to stop, admitting all charges on May 28.
High-Speed Horror on Basingstoke Road
The shocking incident happened on the evening of November 20 last year. Banning was careering along Basingstoke Road in a white BMW 1 Series when he swerved dangerously onto the wrong side of a keep-left bollard. This led to a violent collision with a man riding an electric bike heading the opposite way.
Terrifyingly, Banning fled the scene, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.
Police Praise Witnesses and Promise No Tolerance for Dangerous Drivers
Banning was caught weeks later on December 11, hiding in a family member’s loft. He faced additional charges after assaulting two officers while in custody.
Phil Hanham of the Joint Roads Policing Unit said, “We sympathise with the victim and their family who face a long road to recovery. We thank the witnesses and the victim’s family for their help in this investigation.”
“We will not tolerate behaviour like this on our roads and will prosecute those who recklessly break the law,” he added.
This case is a stark warning about the devastating consequences of dangerous driving and the fierce commitment of UK police to hold offenders accountable.
