Arsonist Jamie Barrow slashes life sentence over deadly blaze that killed mum and her two daughters
Horrific Fire Claims Three Lives
Jamie Barrow, 32, has successfully cut his life sentence for the brutal arson attack that claimed the lives of Fatoumatta Hydara, 28, and her two young daughters, Fatimah (3) and Naeemah (1). Last year, Barrow was jailed for life with a minimum of 44 years after setting fire to their flat in Clifton, Nottingham.
In November 2022, after downing several cans of lager, Barrow poured petrol through their letterbox before igniting the blaze. Horrifyingly, he stood outside as the family screamed trapped inside, dying from smoke inhalation.
Judges Slash Sentence, Citing ‘Manifest Excess’
This week, the Royal Courts of Justice in London reduced Barrow’s minimum term from 44 to 38 years. Lord Justice Singh and his fellow judges called the original sentence “manifestly excessive,” aiming for consistency with similar cases. Barrow’s lawyer, Chris Henley KC, argued the initial punishment was too harsh compared to other rulings — a point the judges agreed on.
Still, the judges expressed “sincere sympathy” for the devastated family, insisting the reduction does not lessen Barrow’s horrific crime.
Motive Remains Murky, Family Speak Out
Barrow never revealed why he started the fire. Prosecutors suggested he may have been angry over rubbish left in a nearby alley, noise disturbances, or pressure from Nottingham City Council to move. During the trial, Barrow was seen calmly watching the flames for several minutes before walking away.
In a gut-wrenching victim impact statement, Aboubacarr Drammeh, husband and father, described his plunge into despair since the tragedy. Mrs Hydara’s mother, Aminata Dibba, branded Barrow a “monster” and “heartless human being” at court, laying bare the ongoing pain caused by his actions.
Reduced Sentence Sparks Outrage
While Barrow’s sentence cut may have legal grounds, it rips open fresh wounds for the victims’ families. Their heartbreaking loss stands as a stark reminder of the lasting, devastating impact senseless violence leaves behind.
