Shock Overload: Nottingham Car Packed with 14 Passengers
Police in Nottingham made a jaw-dropping discovery after stopping a seven-seater Vauxhall Zafira on Nottingham Road, New Basford. The vehicle was stuffed with 14 passengers – double its legal limit!
Children Unbelted in Dangerous Overcrowding
Among those crammed in were eight children, none wearing seatbelts. Officers pulled the car over on Monday, 27 May, after suspecting it was dangerously overloaded. The lack of seatbelt use and sheer number of passengers sent alarms ringing.
Driver Faces Court Over Reckless Offences
The male driver has been summoned to court facing multiple charges including driving without due care, endangering children by not securing seatbelts, and using a vehicle with more passengers than it’s designed for.
PC Dan Bird of Radford Road Response team warned: “Carrying too many passengers is a serious offence with huge safety risks. People are twice as likely to die in a crash if they’re not wearing seatbelts. Finding eight unbelted children in one car is shocking. Overloading voids insurance and can lead to hefty fines, penalty points, or court summons with even harsher penalties.”
Seatbelt Laws: What You Need to Know
- All drivers and passengers must wear seatbelts, front or back.
- Drivers must ensure children under 14 are buckled up.
- Passengers 14 and older are responsible for wearing their own seatbelts.
- Fines start at £100 but can rise to £500 if taken to court.
This terrifying incident is a stark reminder to follow vehicle safety laws. Ignoring these rules not only risks lives but also carries serious legal consequences.
