Man Tasered and Jumps from Chelsea Bridge Was Holding Firelighter, Not Screwdriver

Police Watchdog Reveals New Details

The shocking incident on Chelsea Bridge took a tragic turn on June 4 when Oladeji Adeyemi Omishore, 41, was Tasered by police and then plunged into the River Thames. Initially, police believed he was armed with a screwdriver. However, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has now confirmed he was actually carrying a plastic and metal firelighter.

Events Leading to Tragedy

Footage shared on social media shows Mr Omishore running to the edge of the bridge after the Taser was fired multiple times and jumping over the barrier into the river below. The IOPC continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Investigation Ongoing, Family Kept Informed

Sal Naseem, regional director of the IOPC, expressed sympathy for the family: “Our hearts go out to Mr Omishore’s family and everyone affected by his death.” She confirmed the IOPC remains in contact with them and is gathering evidence, including witness statements and video footage.

“It is critical that we comprehend all of the circumstances surrounding his death,” Naseem added.

Call for Witnesses

The IOPC urges anyone who saw the incident or recorded any footage from the bridge or after Mr Omishore entered the Thames to come forward immediately. A post-mortem has been carried out, and the cause of death awaits confirmation from a pathologist’s report.
