Ex-Essex cop jailed for grooming kids on TikTok and Snapchat
Mark Ling’s vile online hunting exposed
A former Essex Police officer, Mark Ling, 39, has been locked up for four-and-a-half years after admitting 13 sexual offences against children aged 12 to 14. Ling, from Ipswich, used TikTok and Snapchat to lure and manipulate youngsters into sending explicit images.
He pleaded guilty earlier this year at Ipswich Crown Court. Judge Martyn Levett branded him a “sophisticated sex offender” who cunningly exploited social media to groom vulnerable kids.
False profiles, fake teens, and ‘loyalty tests’
The court heard Ling used a family member’s phone to create fake profiles online. He impersonated a teenage girl named “Jessie” on TikTok to snare victims, then switched to a fake teen boy called “Tom” on Snapchat to keep up the charade.
- Ling pressured young girls into “loyalty tests”, pushing them to send explicit pictures
- Victims described their trauma, with one 14-year-old suffering panic attacks and a 13-year-old with ADHD and autism fearing for her safety
Sacked and condemned by police chiefs
Following an accelerated misconduct hearing, Ling was dismissed from Essex Police in December 2024. Chief Constable BJ Harrington slammed Ling’s actions:
“Mark Ling is a serial offender who has no place in policing. His actions disgust us and do not reflect the values of our dedicated officers and staff.”
Calls grow for tougher online child protections
The NSPCC warned of hidden dangers in private messaging apps like Snapchat. A spokesperson said:
“This case shows how offenders are exploiting private messaging platforms to abuse children out of sight.”
TikTok confirmed it uses technology to spot grooming signs and enforces restrictions for young users. But experts say more must be done to safeguard kids online.
