Young Drug Dealer Banged Up for Two and a Half Years
Anthony “AJ” Maher, 21, of Moors Avenue, Cheltenham, was sentenced to two years and six months in prison at Gloucester Crown Court today (Thursday 30 May). He had pleaded guilty to being involved in the supply of Class A drugs.
Police Snare Dealer Using Texts and Taxis
Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Vanguard Team uncovered Maher’s drug business while investigating a local drug operation. The 21-year-old used several phone numbers to blast out mass text messages advertising heroin and crack cocaine. One text read: “Active 24/7 Best of Both.”
Maher then booked taxis to meet customers who replied. All taxi rides were traced from his middle name and linked trips between his home and known drug spots.
Phone Left at Crash Gave Police the Evidence
Maher was exposed after a mobile left at a collision scene in Hester’s Way on 11 September 2023 was forensically examined. The phone, dubbed “AJ’s iPhone,” linked directly to him via Apple ID details.
When arrested on 11 November 2023, Maher held a burner phone with dual SIM cards, allowing him to send texts from multiple numbers simultaneously to keep the trade going.
Cop’s Warning After Jail Sentence
“Maher is well known in Cheltenham for his anti-social behaviour and violent offences,” said a police spokesperson. “I’m glad he’s off the streets and can no longer target vulnerable people with drugs.”
Maher pleaded guilty to two counts: being involved in the supply of crack cocaine and heroin on 8 January 2024.
