Step-Son Avoids Jail After Stabbing Stepdad in Self-Defence Plea

Neal Clarke, 21, from Harold Hill, was spared an immediate prison sentence after admitting to stabbing his stepfather, Joe Kelly, multiple times during a violent clash at their Thamesmead home. Clarke said he acted in self-defence, citing years of alleged verbal and physical abuse from Kelly.

Deadly Fight Erupts Over Bedroom Row

The shocking incident took place on March 2, 2022. Prosecutor Efstathios Divaris explained that Kelly entered Clarke’s bedroom and placed dishes on his bed, sparking a heated confrontation. Feeling provoked, Clarke grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Kelly several times. Kelly managed to escape and call emergency services.

Years of Abuse Made Clarke Snap, Court Hears

During the trial, Clarke revealed Kelly had bullied him for years. He even showed the court a scar he claimed was from his stepfather’s violence. Clarke’s defence argued his actions were a last-ditch response to Kelly’s aggressive teasing and intimidation.

Clarke’s lawyer, Yimi Yangye, described him as normally calm and respectful, with this incident a rare and extreme departure from his character. Clarke has been on bail since the attack and has kept out of trouble, now raising a family with his partner.

Judge Suspends Jail Time, Orders Unpaid Work

At Woolwich Crown Court, Judge Neil Saunders acknowledged the gravity of the stabbing but suspended Clarke’s 18-month jail sentence for 18 months. He noted Clarke’s actions after the attack—alerting a bus driver to call police and confiding in a neighbour—showed self-defence.

“You had been actively abused by him, you said,” the judge told Clarke, referencing Kelly’s alleged abuse. He also praised Clarke’s commitment to his family and lack of reoffending.

Clarke was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work and given a restraining order. The case highlights the complex dynamics of domestic disputes and tough legal questions around self-defence claims.
