Car Break-In Attempt Sparks Alarm in Sunderland’s Fulwell

Residents in Sunderland’s Fulwell area are on high alert after a brazen attempt to break into several cars was caught on camera early Sunday morning. The suspect, seen prowling around car doors, managed to get into at least one vehicle without causing damage, raising fears about keyless car security.

Multiple Vehicles Targeted in Early Morning Spree

Social media reports reveal the suspect tried to open a string of car doors in different locations. One Seaburn Dene resident shared their chilling experience:

“Our car was broken into at around 4:50 am this morning on Lunedale Avenue. Despite being locked with a keyless fob, the intruder got in without causing any damage. We urge everyone to check their cars as a precaution.”

Another neighbour from Grizedale Court reported a similar incident at 4:30 am. CCTV footage also shows the suspect attempting car doors in Grange View at 5:10 am, suggesting a widespread attempt across the estate.

How to Protect Your Car from High-Tech Thieves

Police are urging vehicle owners to stay vigilant and use simple but effective prevention measures. One top tip: Faraday pouches, also known as signal-blocking pouches, which block electromagnetic signals from communicating with keyless entry fobs.

  • Blocking Signals: These pouches are made from materials that create a shield, stopping radio frequency (RF) signals from reaching your car keys.
  • Car Security: Thieves often use relay attacks that amplify signals from your key fob to unlock and start cars remotely. Keeping keys inside a Faraday pouch stops this trick dead in its tracks.
