Tragedy struck off Oahu’s coast on Sunday as Tamayo Perry, 49, lifeguard, surfing instructor and actor known for his role in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, was fatally attacked by a shark while surfing near Goat Island. Emergency services confirmed the horror incident just before 1pm local time at Malaekahana Beach.
Rescue Efforts Fail to Save Surfing Legend
A witness alerted authorities after spotting a man suffering apparent shark bites. Rescue teams rushed in on jet skis and pulled Perry to shore, but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, Honolulu Emergency Services spokesperson Shayne Enright revealed. Perry was a respected member of the Ocean Safety department since 2016 and a professional surfer admired worldwide.

Aside from his lifeguard duties, Perry featured on screen in blockbusters like Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and Blue Crush. Honolulu’s Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager paid tribute, calling Perry “a lifeguard loved by all” and “a legendary waterman” known for his infectious personality and generosity.
