Trump Clinches GOP Nomination After Surviving Assassination Attempt
Donald Trump has officially been crowned the Republican presidential nominee, just days after dodging an assassination attempt. The former US president, 78, was confirmed as the party’s pick for November’s showdown at the Republican National Convention (RNC) in Milwaukee.
Running Mate Rumours Heat Up
Trump is expected to name his running mate at the RNC, with Ohio Senator JD Vance tipped as the frontrunner. The announcement comes after a dramatic incident on Saturday when a gunman, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was grazed on the ear but kept his cool and attended the four-day convention starting Monday.
Trump Dominates Delegate Vote
Despite rivals like South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump easily brushed them aside after clinching the majority of delegates earlier this year. Monday’s roll call vote formally sealed his status as the GOP’s standard-bearer.
Each state leader announced their tallies, cementing Trump’s path to face off against the likely Democratic nominee, incumbent President Joe Biden, in November.
More than 2,268 delegates were bound to Trump before the convention, with at least 150 unbound delegates leaning his way too.
Biden Set for Democratic Nod Despite Health Concerns
While President Joe Biden faces growing questions over his mental fitness, he is expected to lock down the Democratic nomination. Biden condemned the violence against Trump and confirmed he will seek re-election.
The Democratic National Convention is set for 19 August, with Biden needing official nomination by 7 August to meet Ohio’s legal deadline.
