French Police Shut Down Migrant Camp After Deadly Channel Tragedy

French police wasted no time. Just 24 hours after a tragic English Channel boat capsize left 12 dead, officers raided and dismantled a massive migrant camp in Calais. The camp, home to roughly 500 migrants mostly from Eritrea, was cleared in a dawn operation at Petit Courgain on Calais’s outskirts.

Camp Cleared Amid Grief and Controversy

Convoys of police vans swept in early morning, stripping tents and scattering personal belongings. Many survivors were reportedly moved hundreds of miles away to a migrant site in southern France. The camp had long served as a launchpad for desperate crossings to Britain.

“The police raid was cruel and brutal,” said Care4Calais, a migrant aid group. “Targeting people’s homes while they’re grieving is unforgivable.”

Survivor Tells Horror of Channel Disaster

The disaster struck on Tuesday when an overcrowded dinghy capsized, tossing over 50 people into icy waters. Among the rescued was 17-year-old Hildia from Eritrea, who witnessed a pregnant woman drown. She spoke openly about her shock and grief.

Despite the police crackdown, many migrants have already started rebuilding the camp. Aid workers continue to provide supplies while young migrants vow to press on. “I want to reach Britain no matter what,” said Ali from Chad.

Investigation Zeroes In on Traffickers

French authorities are hunting those behind the deadly crossing. The ongoing probe targets suspected human traffickers from the Middle East. Officials are sifting through bus records and financial trails. There are also reports the inflatable boat may have been sabotaged, opening the door to manslaughter or mass murder charges.

This tragedy lays bare the desperate risks migrants take to reach the UK and the rising tensions around migration management.
