Hollyoaks Star Ali Bastian Battles Stage 2 Breast Cancer
Ali Bastian, famed for playing Becca Dean in Hollyoaks, has revealed a shocking breast cancer diagnosis. The 42-year-old actress, now living in Ireland with her husband David O’Mahony and their two daughters, was told she has stage 2 breast cancer at the end of June.
Cancer Battle: Chemo, Mastectomy & More
Currently undergoing chemotherapy, Ali faces a tough road ahead, including a mastectomy and radiotherapy. She admitted the diagnosis still hits hard. “I have mornings when I wake up and I’ve forgotten… and then suddenly I remember. I’m still trying to process it,” she said.
From Breastfeeding to Breast Clinic
The lump was first spotted while Ali was breastfeeding her youngest, Isabella, 19 months. Thinking it was just a blocked duct, Ali took antibiotics. When the lump didn’t clear, she sought help and was promptly referred to a breast clinic.
“The news was devastating, but my doctor was very reassuring,” said Ali. “She said the words I’m holding on to — that they have ‘intent to cure me.’”
Family History & Tough Decisions Ahead
Doctors suspect Ali’s cancer is hormone-driven and are exploring genetic links, as her aunt and grandmother also had breast cancer. Ali is set for a single mastectomy, but she’s weighing up whether a double mastectomy might be the safer option.
Ali receives support from an oncology psychologist and a cancer survivor mentor. Despite the challenges, she’s determined to fight through and return to the screen. “I will get through this and come out the other side,” she vowed.
Ali’s acting career, including Doctors and The Bill, remains close to her heart. “I really miss it,” she said.
A Wake-Up Call to Watch Your Health
Ali’s brave story is a stark reminder to watch for health changes and seek prompt medical advice, especially for those with a family history of breast cancer.
