Sussex Photographer Snags Second British Photography Award Nomination

Sussex-based snapper Jacy Wilkes is back in the spotlight with a second British Photography Award nod. Her striking self-portrait, Walls Defrosting, has earned a coveted slot in the fiercely competitive ‘Self Portrait’ category.

Powerful Image Explores Emotional Trauma

Wilkes’ photo delves deep into the frozen, paralysing grip of emotional trauma.

“For me, this image describes that frozen, helpless feeling which often comes with traumatic situations—when anxiety or fear immobilises you, preventing you from falling apart,” she explained.

The image is part of her ongoing master’s research at Falmouth University, shifting her focus from family and real estate photography to raw, personal themes.

Recognition Reignites Wilkes’ Confidence

After doubting her work, Wilkes says this nomination is a huge boost.

“To be shortlisted again amongst such high-calibre entries is an immense honour. This recognition reaffirms the importance of my work and the need for more awareness about emotional trauma, especially in the context of toxic relationships,” she said.

Wilkes graduated in 2024 from Falmouth University’s online Photography MA. She credits the course with helping her find her artistic voice.

“The course was life-changing. It gave me the confidence and support to tell my story through my art, and I’ve made lasting connections through the online community,”

she added.

Public Voting Open for People’s Choice Award

The British Photography Awards will announce winners at a London gala this November. Besides her shortlist nod, Wilkes is also competing for the People’s Choice Award. Public voting is open now and closes on October 9, 2024.
