Suspected Arsonist Arrested After Fire at Popular South East London Food Market

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted arson following a fire at Vinegar Yard, a well-known food market near London Bridge, in the early hours of Sunday, October 13. Emergency services were called to the scene on St Thomas Street at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Multiple police vehicles and fire engines attended the scene, with a significant crime scene cordon in place. A video shared on TikTok captured the aftermath, showing the venue extensively damaged by the blaze.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that two fire engines from Dockhead and Dowgate Fire Stations were deployed to assist in containing the fire. LFB Control Officers received the first of seven emergency calls at 2:29 a.m.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated: “Police were called at 02:27hrs on Sunday, 13 October to reports of a fire at a venue in St Thomas Street, SE1. A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted arson. There were no reports of any injuries, and enquiries continue.”

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the cause of the fire. Vinegar Yard is a popular destination in the area, known for its food stalls and events, and the fire has caused notable damage to the venue. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
