Northumbria Police have identified the man who died following an explosion at a block of flats in Benwell, Newcastle. Jason Laws, 34, was pronounced dead at the scene after the blast occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, 16 October, on Violet Close.
Mr. Laws’ body was discovered by emergency services responding to the incident, which also claimed the life of seven-year-old Archie York. Northumbria Police confirmed that Mr. Laws’ next of kin are being supported by specially-trained officers during this difficult time.
Archie York’s parents paid a heartfelt tribute to their son on Tuesday, describing him as “not only our son but our best friend.”
The explosion led to a significant emergency response, with six additional people—five adults and one child—hospitalized with injuries of varying severity. Homes were reduced to rubble, and a large cordon remains in place as investigations into the cause of the blast continue.
Northumbria Police and fire services are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion, with forensic teams and specialist units on site. Authorities have stated that the cordon will likely remain for some time while they carry out their investigation.
Residents are being advised to avoid the area, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
