Man Dies After Setting Himself on Fire on Sydney Boat

A 61-year-old man has died nearly two weeks after setting himself ablaze on a boat near Scotland Island, in Sydney’s north. The NSW Police have launched a full investigation into the shocking incident.

Self-Immolation on Pittwater

On October 9, emergency services rushed to Pittwater at around 2:55 pm following a welfare check for a distressed man on a boat. The man had activated an EPIRB emergency beacon to signal for help.

During police talks, the man reportedly doused himself with fuel from a jerry can and sparked it with a cigarette, igniting a fire. Police on scene quickly put out the flames and gave immediate first aid.

He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital, where he fought for his life but sadly passed away on the morning of October 26.

Investigation and Mental Health Reminder

NSW Police confirmed a detailed report will go to the Coroner. A critical incident team is probing the facts, with an independent review planned to ensure transparency.

Authorities have urged anyone struggling to seek help. Lifeline can be reached on 13 11 14, and Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636. Mental health support is available around the clock for those in crisis.
