Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been charged with common assault after an alleged incident involving a 45-year-old man on Main Street in Frodsham, Cheshire, last month. Cheshire Police confirmed that Amesbury, 55, will appear in magistrates court later today to face the charge.
The alleged assault was reported to police at 2:48 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Following an investigation by Cheshire Police, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reviewed the evidence and authorized the assault charge.
Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS’s special crime division, stated, “Following a review of the evidence provided by Cheshire Police, we have authorised a charge of common assault against Mike Amesbury MP, 55. The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.”
In response to the charge, the Labour Party has suspended Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
Amesbury’s case is now before the court, and all parties involved are reminded to respect the legal process as it progresses.
