Labour MP Mike Amesbury Charged with Assault in Cheshire
Labour MP Mike Amesbury faces a common assault charge following an alleged incident on Main Street, Frodsham, Cheshire, last month. The 55-year-old was arrested after a 45-year-old man reportedly suffered an assault in the early hours of October 26, 2024.
Cheshire Police and CPS Confirm Charge
Cheshire Police confirmed the charge and say Amesbury will appear in magistrates court later today. The incident was reported at 2:48 a.m., prompting an investigation that led to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) authorising the assault charge.
Rosemary Ainslie, head of the CPS’s special crime division, said: “Following a review of the evidence provided by Cheshire Police, we have authorised a charge of common assault against Mike Amesbury MP, 55. We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings are active and he is entitled to a fair trial.”
Labour Suspends Mike Amesbury
The Labour Party has swiftly suspended Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby, while legal proceedings continue. The party stated the suspension is pending the outcome of the court case.
