Shoppers in Chatham town centre are being urged to remain vigilant following a distraction theft where a man had a gold chain stolen.
The incident occurred on Monday, 18 November 2024, at around 2:30 pm in the High Street. The victim was approached by a woman he did not know who unexpectedly hugged him before fleeing towards Military Road. The man later discovered his gold chain, featuring a lion emblem, was missing.
Suspect Description
The suspect is described as a white woman, aged 20 to 25, of slim build, with brown hair. She reportedly spoke with an eastern European accent and was wearing a white woollen hat, a white top, and white trousers at the time of the theft.
Police Appeal
Police Sergeant Jason Francis of Kent Police said:
“As the festive period approaches, we want to remind people to remain alert when out shopping. If you are approached by someone you do not know who asks for directions, shakes your hand, or attempts to hug you, be cautious and protect your valuables.”
He added:
“This chain held significant sentimental value to the victim, and we urge anyone who may have been offered the item for sale to contact us.”

Police advise shoppers to stay aware of their surroundings, particularly when approached by strangers in busy areas. Keep wallets, handbags, and other valuables secure to avoid becoming a target for theft.
