Police Crack Down on River Shenanigans Amid Scorching Heatwave
On Wednesday 11 August 2021, officers teamed up with the Environment Agency and Kent Police’s Search and Marine Unit to patrol riverside hotspots in Yalding, Teston, and East Farleigh.
Cooling Off? Think Twice!
The squad spoke to boat owners and passersby, warning them about the serious dangers of swimming in the river. At East Farleigh lock, they shut down a group of youngsters cooling off in the water, reminding them it’s far from safe.
Visible Patrols Target Anti-Social Behaviour
This high-visibility policing effort also aimed to tackle recent reports of anti-social behaviour spoiling the riverside vibe. Officers wanted to reassure locals and visitors alike that safety is top priority.
PC Paul Hughes said, “The warm weather draws crowds to the river, but sadly a few people drink excessively and cause trouble. Some also take risky swims which can end in tragedy. We’ll keep running these operations while the heat lasts to keep everyone safe.”
