Two teenage boys have been arrested following a suspected chemical attack at Surbiton train station that left two police officers hospitalized.
The incident occurred around 4:20 PM on Friday when British Transport Police (BTP) officers on duty noticed two individuals acting suspiciously. As officers approached, they were exposed to a substance believed to be alkaline.
Two officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. A spokesperson for the BTP confirmed that their injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing. Seven other officers, including two from the Metropolitan Police, were assessed at the scene by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.
The suspects, aged 14 and 16, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a corrosive substance in a public place and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. The 16-year-old was also taken to the hospital as a precaution. Police confirmed they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The London Fire Brigade attended the scene to ensure the area was safe, leading to a temporary closure of the station. Normal operations have since resumed.
A BTP spokesperson stated: “The safety of our officers and the public remains our priority. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to come forward.”
The arrests have raised concerns about the use of corrosive substances in public spaces and the risks faced by emergency service personnel while performing their duties.
