A man who befriended and then fatally assaulted a pensioner before stealing his car has been sentenced to five years in prison.
Edgaras Motiejunas, 24, of no fixed address, was convicted of manslaughter and theft at the Old Bailey on 30 September and sentenced today (Tuesday, 3 December).
Incident Details
The victim, 68-year-old Elvaras Simanatis, originally from Lithuania, died from a head injury after being punched by Motiejunas on 16 October 2023. Following the assault in Boundary Lane, East London, Elvaras fell, hitting his head on the pavement, which caused a severe brain bleed. He was taken to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries on 25 October.
Discovery and Arrest
Police were initially called to reports of someone interfering with a car on Boundary Lane. Officers found Motiejunas at the scene and arrested him for possession of a stolen car key. Further investigation revealed the vehicle belonged to Elvaras, who had been assaulted earlier that day.
Detectives established that Motiejunas had struck Elvaras, stealing his car in the process. The post-mortem confirmed the cause of death as a head injury resulting from the assault.
Guilty Plea and Sentence
Motiejunas pleaded guilty to manslaughter and theft of a motor vehicle. Judge sentencing him at the Old Bailey condemned his violent actions, describing them as “callous and preying on a vulnerable individual.”
Police Statement
Detective Inspector Aytac Necati, who led the investigation, said:
“This was a shocking incident. Motiejunas befriended Elvaras, who was older and more vulnerable. He went on to assault him, causing serious injuries, just in order to steal a car.
“Elvaras’ family and friends have suffered immensely with the loss of a loved one. We have supported them throughout the investigation. Motiejunas now faces time in prison to reflect upon his violent actions.”
Family’s Grief
Elvaras’ family has expressed deep sorrow at their loss, remembering him as a kind and caring individual who deserved better. They hope the sentence will bring some measure of justice, though it cannot undo the devastating impact of the crime.
Motiejunas will serve his time reflecting on the crime that has left a family grieving and a community shocked.
