Man Jailed for Killing Pensioner and Swiping His Car

Brutal Attack in East London

A 24-year-old man who fatally assaulted a 68-year-old pensioner before stealing his car was locked up for five years today. Edgaras Motiejunas, of no fixed address, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of manslaughter and theft.

The victim, Elvaras Simanatis from Lithuania, suffered a fatal head injury after Motiejunas punched him on 16 October 2023 in Boundary Lane, East London. Elvaras fell, hitting his head hard on the pavement and suffered a brain bleed. Despite hospital treatment, he died on 25 October.

How Police Caught Motiejunas

Officers responded to reports of suspicious activity involving a car on Boundary Lane. They found Motiejunas with a stolen car key and promptly arrested him. Police investigation revealed the stolen vehicle belonged to the victim, Elvaras, who had been attacked earlier that day.

Forensics confirmed the cause of death was a severe head injury from the assault.

Guilty Plea and Harsh Judgment

Motiejunas pleaded guilty to manslaughter and vehicle theft. The judge slammed his actions as “callous and preying on a vulnerable individual” before handing down the five-year sentence.

Investigator and Family Speak Out

Detective Inspector Aytac Necati said: “This was a shocking incident. Motiejunas befriended Elvaras, who was older and vulnerable. Then he assaulted him just to steal a car.”

“Elvaras’ family and friends have suffered immensely. We supported them throughout the investigation. Motiejunas now faces prison to reflect on his violent actions.”

Elvaras’ family described him as a kind soul who deserved better. They hope the sentence brings justice but know nothing can undo their loss.

Motiejunas must now serve his time, leaving behind a grieving family and a shocked community.
