City Hall has confirmed it is “monitoring the weather” ahead of London’s highly anticipated New Year’s Eve celebrations, following the cancellation of some of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festivities due to adverse weather conditions.
Severe Weather Warnings Across the UK
The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings affecting much of the UK from Monday, December 30, to Wednesday, January 1. These include:
- Yellow warnings for heavy rain and snow in Scotland, with an amber warning for rain around Inverness.
- Yellow warnings for wind and rain in parts of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with winds of up to 70mph expected on New Year’s Eve.
- Turbulent conditions forecast to persist into New Year’s Day, with gusts of up to 75mph along coastal areas and hills.
Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Events Cancelled
Organisers in Edinburgh announced the cancellation of major outdoor events, including:
- The Night Afore Disco Party in West Princes Street Gardens on December 30.
- The Street Party, Concert in the Gardens, and midnight fireworks at Edinburgh Castle on December 31.
A spokesperson cited “public safety concerns” due to high winds and inclement weather that prevented necessary preparations. Indoor events, however, will proceed as planned.
London’s Celebrations Under Scrutiny
London’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks display, hosted by the Mayor of London, is set to proceed as planned. However, City Hall has stated it is “closely monitoring” the weather forecast.
The Met Office has warned of potential transport delays on New Year’s Eve due to strong winds, which may disrupt road, rail, and air travel. Gusts of up to 70mph could affect much of England and Northern Ireland.
