Ross Kemp to Return as Grant Mitchell for EastEnders 40th Anniversary

The BBC has confirmed that Ross Kemp will reprise his iconic role as Grant Mitchell in EastEnders as part of the soap’s 40th-anniversary celebrations in 2025. Kemp, 60, last appeared on the show in 2016, and his return promises to deliver an “explosive” storyline.

A Legendary Character Returns

Grant Mitchell’s comeback coincides with his brother Phil Mitchell’s struggle with loneliness, following the surprise return of their childhood friend Nigel Bates to Albert Square over the festive period after almost 30 years away.

Speaking about his return, Kemp said:
“I’m delighted to be returning to EastEnders as the show heads towards its 40th anniversary. EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary is an absolute honour. Grant has never been far from the action, and let’s just say, this time is no different as he certainly comes back with a bang.”

Revisiting Classic Storylines

Grant Mitchell has been at the center of some of EastEnders’ most memorable moments, including his tumultuous marriage to Tiffany Mitchell and the infamous “Sharongate” storyline, where his wife Sharon had an affair with his brother Phil.

Fans will also recall Grant’s emotional return in 2016 to bid farewell to his mother, Peggy Mitchell, in one of the show’s most heartfelt episodes.

A Key Role in the Anniversary Celebrations

While exact details of Grant’s return remain under wraps, EastEnders executive producer Chris Clenshaw teased that his storyline would be pivotal to the anniversary celebrations.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Ross Kemp back to EastEnders as he reprises the legendary role of Grant Mitchell. His return will play a significant part in the show’s 40th anniversary and will make up many moments of truly unmissable TV.

Grant’s previous returns in the 2000s saw him involved in high-stakes drama, including unmasking Den Watts’ killer, having an affair with Jane Collins, and clashing with gangland boss Johnny Allen.

Grant Mitchell’s EastEnders History

Kemp first joined the cast in 1990, staying for nine years before departing in 1999. He made brief returns between 2005 and 2006, as well as in 2016. Grant’s storylines have often involved action, betrayal, and family feuds, solidifying him as one of the show’s most beloved characters.

Beyond the Square

Outside of EastEnders, Kemp has become a renowned documentary presenter, earning a Bafta for Ross Kemp On Gangs and producing critically acclaimed series such as Ross Kemp In Afghanistan.

Anniversary Excitement

With Kemp’s return adding to the excitement, the 40th-anniversary episodes of EastEnders are shaping up to be unforgettable television. Fans eagerly await the drama Grant Mitchell will bring back to Albert Square.
