12-year-old boy suffers severe burns after ‘prank’ scalding at sleepover
Boiling water poured on sleeping boy’s face at video game party
A 12-year-old boy from Tifton, Georgia, was left with second-degree burns after his friends doused his face with boiling water during a sleepover “prank”. The incident happened while the boy had dozed off at a neighbour’s apartment where three other boys aged 12 to 15 were playing video games.
Emergency surgery and heartbreak
The scalding water caused serious burns, primarily to his face, forcing an urgent trip to a specialised burn centre for emergency surgery. His mother, Tiffany West, revealed her shock and anger at seeing her son’s injuries:
“I really can’t describe it now. In that moment, I was just mad, hurt, in shock. Everything—I was seeing red. I was just trying to hurry up and get him some help.”
Suspects arrested but free pending court
Tifton police arrested all three boys involved but released them to their families. The suspects now await court hearings next month. The victim’s aunt, Nachelle Austile, spoke about the boy’s numb reaction to the betrayal:
“He’s numb about it. You’ve got to be in shock to know your friends are capable of doing this to you. Somebody you trusted—it’s just horrible. He never thought something like this would happen to him.”
Long recovery ahead amid mounting stress
- Second-degree burns typically take about two weeks to heal but can leave permanent scars.
- Both parents have been out of work due to medical appointments and caring duties.
- The family expects the boy will need therapy to recover emotionally and rebuild trust.
Austile added, “My brother and Tiffany have been out of work since this happened with all the travelling. She is still going to be out of work to take care of him while he is recovering. She needs to be here for him.”
Community rallies with donations and support
Despite the ordeal, West expressed heartfelt thanks for the flood of community support and donations. On Facebook, she posted:
“I woke up to so much love being shown to my son! Words can’t describe how thankful I am for each and every one of you! It brings tears to my eyes to know that so many people care for me and my son, and we are not alone in this.”
West added, “Every donation, gift, encouraging word, and prayer puts a smile on my son’s face!”
Police probe ongoing as court date looms
Authorities continue investigating the attack’s circumstances amid growing public outrage over prank culture and dangerous social media challenges. Many are demanding tougher penalties for reckless acts like this brutal “prank”.
