Essex’s Knife Angel Arrives to Tackle Knife Crime Head-On

The Knife Angel – a towering 27-foot sculpture made from 100,000 seized blades – is descending on Chelmsford’s Central Park for a full month. This chilling statue, forged from flick knives, kitchen blades, and even samurai swords, stands as the UK’s National Monument Against Violence and Aggression.

A Monument with a Message

Crafted by the British Ironwork Centre, the Knife Angel tours the country, spotlighting the deadly realities of knife crime and aggression. Chelmsford’s display marks the sculpture’s Essex debut, featuring more than 1,000 blades from local offenders and messages from families impacted by knife violence etched onto its wings.

Knife Amnesty and Youth Events Take Centre Stage

This September, Chelmsford rolls out a comprehensive knife amnesty campaign. New knife bins will appear citywide, allowing residents to safely surrender bladed weapons – no questions asked.

  • Youth-led programs include a vigil to honour victims of knife crime.
  • A youth awards ceremony celebrates positive contributions and new pathways.

Championing Hope & Positive Youth Culture

This campaign is spearheaded by Keep it 100 Youth CIC, a Chelmsford-based organisation, with backing from Chelmsford City Council and Essex Police.

“The Knife Angel’s visit shines a powerful light on the darkness of youth violence. It gives faces to the victims behind the stats. The pandemic hit our young people hard, making this support more vital than ever. This is our chance to spark real conversations and inspire carriers to put down their knives,” said founder Luisa Di Marco.

Essex Youth and Schools Join the Fight

Keep it 100 will soon connect with schools and youth groups across Essex, unveiling a full events calendar in May. The schedule will include an online directory of activities and celebrations of vibrant youth culture.

Councillor Rose Moore, Chelmsford City Council’s Cabinet Member for a Greener and Safer Chelmsford, added:

“Many carry knives for ‘protection’, but it’s costing lives and futures. The Knife Angel has transformed communities nationwide. Bringing it here with Keep it 100 gives us real hope to reach young people with the help they need.”

The Knife Angel lands in Chelmsford on 6 September 2021. For more info, visit www.keepit100essex.com.
