Crackdown on Modern Slavery Hits Canterbury Nail Bars and Car Washes

Kent Police joined forces with Canterbury City Council, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS), The Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority, and Stop the Traffik charity for a major two-day operation on 29-30 July 2021—coinciding with World Day Against Trafficking in Persons.

80 Workers Given Critical Help and Advice

The teams visited 20 nail bars and car washes in Canterbury, speaking directly to over 80 workers and managers. The mission: educate them about their legal rights and how to spot signs of human trafficking and modern slavery.

Workers were offered a safe space to discuss concerns confidentially and were handed vital advice on protection from exploitation.

Fire Safety Crackdown Adds to the Pressure

Kent Fire and Rescue Service didn’t stop there—they slapped a prohibition notice on one property due to serious fire safety breaches, showing zero tolerance for conditions that put workers at risk.

Police Vow Ongoing Fight Against Worker Exploitation

“Kent Police is determined to protect the most vulnerable in our society,” said Sergeant Lee Thompson from Canterbury Community Safety Unit. “We will repeat these visits regularly to build trust, gather intelligence, and take enforcement action where needed.”

He added, “I hope everyone we spoke to now knows their rights and who to contact if they or someone they know falls victim to modern slavery.”

Council and Community Teams Ready to Act

Canterbury City Council’s housing lead, Cllr Joe Howes, said: “We’re proud to back this vital project. Many forced workers also live in unsafe or unsuitable homes. This operation uncovered important intelligence on properties across districts, which we’ll be investigating further.”

If you suspect modern slavery or exploitation in your area, don’t stay silent. Contact Kent Police by dialling 101 or visit their website. For emergencies, call 999.
