New ‘25’ Plates Arrive with DVLA’s Ban List in Tow
Get ready, drivers! The new ‘25’ vehicle registration plates hit UK roads on March 1, 2025. But before you splash out on a personalised plate, beware: the DVLA has slammed the brakes on a fresh batch of banned number plates deemed offensive or inappropriate.
DVLA Cracks Down on Dodgy Plates for 2025
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency has once again rolled out its annual blacklist. It cuts out plates containing sexual innuendos, swear words, drug references, and even mentions of terrorism or crime. Racist, sexist, or otherwise offensive plates won’t get a look in either.
Some banned combos for the new ‘25’ series include:
- 25 HAG, 25 HAT, 25 LAG, 25 LUT, 25 PAS, 25 PAZ, 25 TAB – seemingly innocent, but flagged for hidden meanings
- 25 RUS, 25 UKR – no shoutouts to the Russia-Ukraine conflict
- AR25 WAR, EU25 WAR, GB25 WAR, GO25 WAR – war references banned outright
- GB25 BAD, GB25 BOM, GB25 SHT – subtle offensive nods blocked
The aim? Stop plates that could spark outrage or upset across a sensitive global landscape.
Industry Boss Weighs In
“It’s always entertaining to see which plates get the chop,” says Mark Trimbee, CEO of Regtransfers. “But it reminds us why the DVLA needs to keep a close eye. Personalised plates are fun, but they mustn’t carry harmful messages.”
Trimbee admits it’s a “balancing act,” as some combos may have unintended meanings.
Legal Number Plate Rules You Must Know
Beyond banned words, the DVLA enforces strict rules to ensure plates are clear and legal:
- Must be made from reflective material
- Front plate: black letters on white; Rear plate: black letters on yellow
- No patterns in the background allowed
- Supplier info and British Standard ‘BS AU 145e’ mark required for plates issued after September 1, 2021
- Characters must be fixed and not reflective
- 3D characters, flags, and certain symbols are allowed post-September 2021
When Can You Get Your ‘25’ Plate?
The new ‘25’ registration plates go live on March 1, 2025. Meanwhile, the ‘75’ series will arrive in September 2025. If planning to personalise, double-check the DVLA’s list and rules to dodge fines or losing your plate.
So get ready to add some flair—but keep it clean, or risk getting slapped down by the DVLA!
