Faversham’s Notorious Shoplifter Locked Up for Nearly Three Years!

£2,000 Worth of Goods Nicked Across Town

Gareth Owen, 43, from High Street, Faversham, has finally been jailed after a brazen crime spree targeting local shops. Between 25 July and 11 August 2024, Owen swiped thousands of pounds worth of toiletries, cosmetics, laundry products, meat, and booze from town centre stores.

He stuffed his ill-gotten haul into a bag and walked out without paying. His haul included loot from big names like Boots, Poundland, Morrisons, the Co-op, and Sainsbury’s.

Police Crack Down After CCTV Foils Getaway

Kent Police were called in after businesses reported the thefts. Investigators scoured CCTV footage and soon zeroed in on Owen. He was nabbed on 12 August and charged with 20 theft offences.

At Medway Magistrates’ Court, Owen pleaded guilty not just to the July-August crimes but also to 11 earlier thefts from 8 May to 19 July. He was remanded for sentencing at Maidstone Crown Court.

Two Years and Eight Months Behind Bars

On 28 October 2024, Owen was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison for his string of crimes, finally paying the price for his selfish spree.

Police Vow to Keep Tough on Repeat Offenders

District Chief Inspector Vanessa Foster said: “This criminal has been stealing to fund his drug addiction, with no regard for the impact on local businesses. Shop workers work hard to earn a living, and it’s demoralising to see offenders like Owen repeatedly steal from them.”

She added, “Our neighbourhood officers are determined to bring persistent thieves to justice. Owen will be closely monitored when he is released.”

Owen’s conviction shows Faversham police are cracking down hard on crime, protecting local businesses from repeat offenders and keeping the town safe.
