72-year-old man caught stealing Poppy Appeal box from Lewisham Sainsbury’s
Glenard Beaumont Pleads Guilty
Glenard Beaumont, 72, from Auckland Hill, West Norwood, admitted stealing a Poppy Appeal charity box from a Lewisham Sainsbury’s store. He appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, January 27, and pleaded guilty to theft.
The crime happened on November 6 when Beaumont took the charity box collecting donations for the annual Poppy Appeal, which supports veterans and their families.
Suspended Jail and Compensation Order
Beaumont received a four-week prison sentence, suspended for one year. That means he won’t go to jail unless he offends again or breaks the terms of his sentence.
The court also ordered him to pay £100 compensation, which will be deducted straight from his benefits.
Community Outraged Over Charity Theft
The theft has left many locals fuming, as the Poppy Appeal is a cherished cause. But some sympathise, urging more support for vulnerable people to stop crimes like this from happening.
This case puts a spotlight on how crucial it is to protect charity collections, making sure every penny goes to those in need.
