Tragedy on Portsdown Road: A 66-year-old woman has died after a horrific house fire ripped through her home in Portchester in the early hours of Monday, February 24.
Massive Fire Response
Emergency services were called at around 5:15 AM. Fire crews from Portchester, Cosham, Fareham, Waterlooville, Southsea, and Eastleigh rushed to the scene as the property was already fully engulfed in flames.
Despite their swift efforts, the woman was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital where she tragically later died. Portsdown Road was shut off both ways as fire engines and emergency vehicles blocked the street.
Investigation Underway
A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson said:
“We were called at 5:28 AM to report a fire at a house on Portsdown Road, Portsmouth. A 66-year-old woman was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital where, sadly, she was pronounced dead. Her next of kin have been informed.”
Authorities are working alongside Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service to find out what caused the blaze.
“A scene will remain in place while these enquiries are carried out,” the spokesperson added.
Local Impact and Road Closures
Portsdown Road remains closed in both directions while investigators and emergency crews continue their work. Residents are urged to avoid the area and obey instructions from officials on site.
Community Pays Tribute
Neighbours have started leaving flowers near the damaged property to honour the victim. Local resident Sarah Jenkins said:
“It’s heartbreaking. She was such a lovely woman, always friendly and kind. We’re all in shock.”
