Runcorn and Helsby By-Election Looms After MP’s Assault Conviction

A political bombshell is set to shake Runcorn and Helsby as Labour MP Mike Amesbury prepares to quit following a scandalous assault conviction. The constituency faces a by-election after years of turmoil surrounding Amesbury, who has represented the area since 2017.

MP Convicted of Assault After CCTV Footage Emerges

Mike Amesbury’s fall from grace came fast and hard. He was caught on CCTV delivering repeated blows to constituent Paul Fellows in Frodsham, Cheshire, in the early hours of 26 October 2024. The court dismissed Amesbury’s self-defence claim outright, initially jailing him for 10 weeks on 24 February 2025. He served three nights at HMP Altcourse before an appeal reduced his sentence to a suspended term.

His revised punishment included 200 hours of unpaid work, an alcohol monitoring programme, and an anger management course. However, the conviction triggered an automatic recall petition under the Recall of MPs Act 2015, demanding action against MPs with custodial sentences—suspended or not.

Recall Petition Opens, But Resignation Could Call Early Vote

With appeals exhausted, the recall petition will open within the next 10 working days. Halton Borough Council will oversee the process, which runs for six weeks. If 10% of voters sign, a by-election must follow.

Yet insiders suggest Amesbury may beat the petition to the punch by resigning before it concludes. Such a move would trigger a by-election immediately, skipping the petition drama altogether.

If it goes to petition, Parliament could call the by-election to coincide with local elections on 1 May 2025.

Political Fallout: Calls for Immediate Resignation

The scandal has sparked fury across party lines. Reform UK chairman Zia Yusuf slammed the delay in ousting Amesbury, saying:

“The great people of Runcorn deserve far better than waiting six weeks for a recall petition. He should resign immediately.”

Conservative co-chair Nigel Huddleston also spoke out:

“Residents deserve an MP who can stand up for them in Parliament, not one embroiled in criminal proceedings.”

Labour suspended Amesbury back in October 2024 following assault reports. The party is now racing to pick a replacement candidate for the inevitable by-election.

A Labour spokesperson added:

“His actions were completely unacceptable. We look forward to Runcorn and Helsby getting the representation they deserve with a new Labour MP.”

Battle Lines Drawn for Hotly Contested By-Election

Labour’s grip on the constituency has been severely damaged. Both Reform UK and the Tories are gearing up to exploit voter anger. Political watchers predict a fierce fight, especially if the by-election aligns with May’s local polls.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper hinted an early vote might be best but stressed timing depends on whether Amesbury steps down voluntarily or the recall petition plays out.

What Happens Next?

  • If 10% of voters sign the recall petition, a by-election is triggered.
  • If Mike Amesbury resigns before the petition closes, a by-election will be called immediately.
  • A new MP could be in place as soon as May 2025.
