Major Collision Closes A2 in Kent in Both Directions – Diversions in Place

A serious collision has forced the closure of the A2 in Kent in both directions between the A227 (Gravesend) and M2 Junction 1 (Rochester), causing significant travel disruption across the region.

Kent Police are currently at the scene and are working to manage traffic and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet confirmed the nature of the collision or whether any injuries have been reported.

Delays Expected – Drivers Urged to Plan Ahead

Motorists are being warned to expect lengthy delays on approach to the closure points, and are advised to seek alternative routes where possible. National Highways has issued detailed diversion routes for both eastbound (coastbound) and westbound (Londonbound) traffic.

Eastbound/Coastbound Diversion (‘Solid Circle’ Symbol)

  • Exit the A2 at the Marling Cross junction for Gravesend (E).

  • Take the 2nd exit at the first roundabout, then 1st exit onto Valley Drive at the next roundabout.

  • Continue on Valley Drive for approximately 2 miles to a T-junction, then turn right onto the B261 Old Road East.

  • At the roundabout with the A226, take the 4th exit onto the A226 eastbound towards Rochester.

  • Stay on the A226 through Higham, continuing to the A289 junction (Gads Hill Interchange).

  • Non-motorway traffic should take the 2nd exit, then 1st exit, and rejoin the A2.

  • Motorway-capable vehicles can take the 2nd exit at the first roundabout, then 2nd exit at the next roundabout, joining the A289 southbound, then the M2 coastbound.

Westbound/Londonbound Diversion (‘Solid Square’ Symbol)

  • Leave the M2 at J1 and join the A289 eastbound.

  • Take the next junction slip road to the A226 roundabout, and follow the A226 to the Lion Roundabout.

  • Take the 1st exit onto the B261, then turn left onto Valley Drive.

  • Continue to the roundabout with Hever Court Road, take the 2nd exit, then 1st exit at the next roundabout onto Henhurst Road.

  • At the roundabout with the A2, take the 3rd exit to rejoin the A2 westbound.

Public Urged to Check Before Travelling

A spokesperson for National Highways said:

“We strongly advise drivers to plan ahead, allow extra journey time, or consider delaying travel if possible while emergency services continue their work at the scene.”
