High-Speed Police Chase Ends in Serious Crash in Thornton Heath
A dramatic early-morning police pursuit through Thornton Heath ended in a serious crash, leaving a man injured and sparking a massive emergency response.
Wild Chase Through Croydon Streets
Eyewitnesses spotted a blue car tearing down Whitehorse Road with police hot on its tail.
“It was flying down the road with police behind it,” said one passerby on her way to work. “I couldn’t believe how fast it was going.”
The chase came to a violent halt at the junction of Devonshire Road and Croydon Road, just inches from a local GP surgery. Black safety bollards helped prevent the vehicle from crashing into the building, absorbing the impact.
Emergency Crews Race to Scene
Firefighters from Croydon Fire Station used specialist cutting equipment to rip away the roof and doors of the mangled car, freeing the male driver trapped inside.
The man, believed to be of pensionable age, was carefully secured to a spinal board and rushed to a nearby major trauma centre. His current condition remains unknown.
Ongoing Police Investigation Causes Disruption
The Metropolitan Police’s Catford Roads Policing Unit is leading the investigation. The reasons behind the pursuit and crash are still unclear.
A cordon remains in place. Local bus routes are being diverted as collision investigators comb the scene.
Public Urged to Avoid the Area
Authorities warn the public to steer clear while emergency crews continue recovery and inquiry efforts.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:
“We were called at 6.01am on 28 March to reports of a road traffic collision on Whitehorse Road, Croydon. We dispatched an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, a paramedic in a fast response car and an incident response officer. We treated a man at the scene and took him to a major trauma centre as a priority.”
